Bicycle Friendly America
Making the country safer for cycling
Bikes Belong has been a top sponsor and partner of the League of American Bicyclists' Bicycle Friendly America (BFA) program since it began in 2003. We have invested more than $1 million in this transformational effort to recognize cities, states, businesses, and universities for their support of bike-friendly policies, programs, education, and encouragement where people live, learn, work, and play.
Twice each year, the League of American Bicyclists awards Bicycle Friendly designations with four levels of recognition: Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze. Every awardee has demonstrated significant work to create exemplary conditions for bicycling.
Bicycle Friendly States
All 50 states are ranked in six key areas based on their responses to a 75-item questionnaire. Areas include legislation, policies & programs, infrastructure, education & encouragement, evaluation & planning, and enforcement.
Find out where your state ranks and get more information on how the evaluation is made on the League's Bicycle Friendly States website.
Bicycle Friendly Communities
By recognizing role-model communities, the BFC program motivates other cities throughout the country to improve their bicycle facilities. The spirit of competition among city mayors inspires action nationwide and makes our cities and towns better for bicycling.
More than 175 cities and towns are recognized as Bicycle Friendly. Check out the list for a community near you!
Bicycle Friendly Businesses
The Bicycle Friendly Business program offers resources and technical assistance to help businesses create the culture and facilities to promote bicycling. The program appeals to businesses’ corporate social responsibility and greening efforts.
The BFB program evaluates applicants' efforts to promote bicycling in four key areas: engineering, education, encouragement and evaluation. Since the program's inception in 2008, the League has received hundreds of applications and has selected those employers who celebrate cycling and see it as a key component of their support for their workers and their communities.

Bicycle Friendly Universities
The newest addition to the Bicycle Friendly America program debuted in 2011 with 20 universities recognized and one - Stanford University - receiving a Platinum level designation. The League provides a roadmap and technical assistance to institutions of higher learning that strive to make their campuses more bicycle friendly for students, staff, and visitors.
