Applying for a Grant

Who is eligible for a Bikes Belong Grant?

In order to insure that you are eligible to apply for a Bikes Belong grant, please read the following criteria carefully.

The Bikes Belong Coalition welcomes grant applications from organizations and agencies within the United States that are committed to putting more people on bicycles more often.

Fundable projects include paved bike paths, lanes, and rail-trails as well as mountain bike trails, bike parks, BMX facilities, and large-scale bicycle advocacy initiatives.

In 2013, Bikes Belong will accept Community Partnership Grant Applications only. These proposals must come from a partnership that is minimally comprised of one government agency or office, one non-profit organization, and one business. Proposals may be for facility or advocacy projects but must be submitted on the Community Partnership Grant Application. Additional information is available on the Grant Seekers Guide page.

Bikes Belong does NOT fund the following:

  • Bicycle recycling, repair or earn-a-bike programs
  • Bicycle rodeos, classes or clinics
  • Purchases of bicycles, helmets or equipment of any kind
  • Safe Routes to School advocacy initiatives (we invest significantly in the Safe Routes to School National Partnership)

The Bikes Belong Grants Program has two application categories:

  1. Facility
  2. Advocacy

For the facility category, Bikes Belong will accept applications from nonprofit organizations whose missions are bicycle and/or trail specific. We will also accept applications from public agencies and departments at the national, state, regional, and local levels, however we encourage these municipalities to align with a local bicycle advocacy group that will help develop and advance the project or program.

For the advocacy category, Bikes Belong will only fund organizations whose primary mission is bicycle advocacy.

A key goal of the Bikes Belong grants program is to support bicycling in as many places as possible. Because of our limited funds, we rarely award grants to organizations and communities that have received Bikes Belong funding within the past three years.

If your organization is new, and you have not yet acquired your nonprofit status, you may submit an application with the assistance of another nonprofit that has agreed to serve as your fiscal agent. You will need to provide a letter from the fiscal sponsor outlining their role in the project.

Bikes Belong will not fund individuals.
