BMX Issue Paper Now Online
January 20, 2007
Bikes Belong has just published a solutions-oriented report that examines BMX use of parks that have been built and managed primarily for skaters. These venues are a natural opportunity for bicycling, since BMXers enjoy many of the same features as skateboarders. Yet BMX use of skateparks has raised concerns about liability, compatibility with skateboarders, and potential damage to park surfaces. Our document offers advice on making it work. BMX racing will be part of the Olympics for the first time in 2008. While BMX racing and freestyle are separate disciplines, both are BMX and both get people on bicycles. This category of bicycling is gaining prominence, and the bike industry needs to be thinking about how to capitalize on this opportunity. Allowing BMX in more skateparks is a natural way to boost participation in the sport.
