Introducing the Bicycle Friendly Universities Program

December 09, 2010

Bikes Belong has been a top sponsor and partner of the League's Bicycle Friendly America program since it began in 2003. We've invested more than $1 million in this transformation effort. Through these great initiatives, businesses, communities, and states have become better for bicycling -- and they're getting recognition and support for their bicycle-friendly efforts. At all levels -- Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Honorable Mention -- the BFA program encourages and honors work to make bicycling safe, fun, and rewarding.

Now, after receiving many requests from schools across the country, the League has developed an award program to recognize the many colleges and universities that implement facilities and policies to make bicycling the fastest, safest, and most efficient way to get around campus: Bicycle Friendly Universities.

"I applaud the vision for bicycle friendly designations for colleges and universities," said Ariadne Delon Scott, Bicycle Program Coordinator at Stanford University and Bikes Belong Foundation board member. "The designations will be a catalyst for academic environments to champion increased bicycling while promoting the safety, environmental, and health benefits of riding. It's a win-win for everyone, and sets the bar high for benchmarking best practices, so we can share and learn from each other."

The BFU application is now available. Applications are due Jan. 21, 2011. The League will announce the first award winners at the National Bike Summit in Washington, D.C. on March 9, 2011. Learn more and apply.
