New 2005 Bicycle Friendly Communities Announced
May 15, 2005
The League of American Bicyclists recently announced the latest recipients of its Bicycle Friendly Communities designation. Bikes Belong is the lead sponsor of this program, which recognizes cities that support bicycling and works to replicate successes in other communities. The program evaluates cities in five categories—engineering, education, encouragement, enforcement, and evaluation—to determine their commitment to creating favorable conditions for bicyclists. Five communities earned the Bicycle Friendly Community designation for the first time, led by silver-award winners Chicago, Illinois, and Scottsdale, Arizona. Eleven other communities received renewed recognition in this round, and six received honorable mention for notable achievement in one of the five evaluation categories. No community has ever received the highest designation, platinum, and gold-level status has been awarded to only four cities—Boulder, Colorado; Corvallis and Portland, Oregon; and Palo Alto, California. about the Bicycle Friendly Communities program.
