Update from America Bikes
July 21, 2005
On July 21, the U.S. House and Senate passed the tenth extension to TEA-21, giving lawmakers until Wednesday, July 27 to resolve differences and present a bill to President Bush for his signature. After a period of delay, the process is moving again. The eight senior House and Senate conferees met July 21 in an effort to resolve a dispute over how much each state gets back from the gas taxes it collects for the Highway Trust Fund. This had been a major stumbling block. It seems that there is also consensus on transit funding, and optimists now suggest that a conference report may be available by next Tuesday. To our knowledge, bicycle and pedestrian provisions do not appear to be major issues impeding final agreement. America Bikes remains confident that a bill will be passed before Congress moves into summer recess on August 1. We are grateful for your continued support and lobbying efforts. We have heard positive indications about bicycling provisions in the bill and will let you know when details are confirmed. For now, the campaign continues! Remember to check http://www.americabikes.org for regular updates on the bill’s progress as the America Bikes government affairs team works hard to promote our agenda and provide the very latest news. Bikes Belong has been the primary sponsor of America Bikes since its inception. about our efforts to maximize federal funding for bicycling.
