Freiker Program Inspires Kids to Ride to School

Established in Boulder, Colorado, in 2004, Freiker is an innovative program to encourage elementary school children to ride their bikes to school. Using a high-tech scanning device along with special chips attached to students' helmets, the program automatically tracks when a student bikes to school. Students earn prizes by racking up days riding to school.

The program has proven very successful. Crest View Elementary, where the program started, doubled ridership in two years. From 2007 to 2008, the school logged more than 27,000 rides.

Now Freiker—which means Frequent Biker—is expanding. Five additional Boulder County schools are using the system, and the program is rolling out nationally. The Bikes Belong Foundation awarded Freiker a Paul David Clark Best Practices Grant to help it expand.
