Bikes Belong presents BFC designation in Vail
Elizabeth, our grants & research director, presented the Town of Vail, CO with a Bronze Bicycle Friendly Community award at their City Council meeting on June 2, 2009. She works closely with the League of American Bicyclists on the BFC program and jumped at the chance to be of service (and check out the sweet singletrack) in Vail. The community was recognized for its excellent bike-path system, wonderful mountain bike trails, and overall “bike-ability,” which enables Vail to host numerous cycling events and races in the summer months.
Using the rigorous application process as a baseline, Vail already has its sights set on a higher BFC designation. The community plans to implement better signage on its path system, hold more organized rides for locals and visitors, and implement and enhance encouragement programs like Safe Routes to School. Vail has also generated some healthy competition among its neighboring ski towns. The word on the street (complete, of course) is that Breckinridge will be applying for BFC status in the upcoming round!
