Safe Routes to School National Partnership
The Bikes Belong Foundation is the host of the Safe Routes to School National Partnership, which launched in August 2005 after Congress authorized $612 million for the first national Safe Routes to School program.
Safe Routes to School is an international movement designed to create safe, convenient, and fun opportunities for children to walk and bicycle to school. This movement is helping address critical issues related to children’s health, traffic congestion, public safety, and the environment.
We support this important effort
Bikes Belong provides financial and administrative support for the Safe Routes to School National Partnership, a growing coalition of more than 350 nonprofit organizations, government agencies, schools, and professionals working together to advance the Safe Routes to School movement in the United States.
The partnership sets goals, shares best practices, secures project funding, provides technical assistance, and offers policy input to agencies that are implementing Safe Routes to School programs. Members include AARP, the American Heart Association, the PTA, the National Association for Health and Fitness, and hundreds of other groups.
Creating state networks
In 2007, the Safe Routes to School National Partnership launched the State Network Project using funding from Bikes Belong and a generous grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The project is creating Safe Routes to School state networks in nine states and the District of Columbia to help them make the best use of federal Safe Routes to School funds and make it easier for children to walk and bike to schools.
