National Groups We Support

Bikes Belong is committed to supporting the work of other national bicycle advocacy groups. They are important partners that are dedicated to improving bicycling. These organizations provide valuable leadership that empowers local and state efforts and mobilizes the use of federal funds authorized for bicycling.

America Bikes

Bikes Belong is the lead funder of America Bikes, a coalition of eight national groups working together to create a national strategy to increase federal support for bicycling. America Bikes led the lobbying effort that won $4.5 billion for bicycling in the 2005 federal transportation law. We are now ramping up efforts to work on the next federal transportation bill, due in 2009.

The eight groups involved with America Bikes are:

International Mountain Bicycling Association

IMBA is doing excellent work to create, preserve, and enhance mountain bicycling opportunities. We provide financial assistance to further their efforts in Washington, D.C., and recruit mountain bikers to attend the National Bike Summit.

League of American Bicyclists

Based in Washington, D.C., the League of American Bicyclists is an individual membership-based organization that performs important policy, safety, and education work. Bikes Belong is a lead sponsor of two important League efforts: the National Bike Summit and the Bicycle Friendly Communities program.

National Complete Streets Coalition

The National Complete Streets Coalition leads the effort to develop "complete streets"—roadways that accommodate all users, including bicyclists, pedestrians, automobiles, and public transit. Bikes Belong provides financial support to match grant money from AARP and the American Society of Landscape Architects, aligning us with influential partners.

Thunderhead Alliance

Thunderhead Alliance provides leadership and guidance for bicycle and pedestrian advocacy groups nationwide. Bikes Belong helps fund their Benchmarking Project, a data collection and analysis effort to measure the success of U.S. bicycling programs. In addition, we support Thunderhead’s efforts to help local advocacy groups access federal transportation money available for bicycling and walking projects.
