2007 Benchmarking Report on Bicycling Released

September 22, 2007
A Thunderhead Alliance report on the status of bicycling and walking in the U.S. has been published as part of Thunderhead’s ongoing Benchmarking Project. Bikes Belong contributed $10,000 to the project, supplementing a $50,000 grant from the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The project aims to collect available bicycling and walking data, identify gaps in information, measure progress towards increasing bicycling and walking, and provide the information and statistics needed to build support for bicycling and walking.

The 2007 Benchmarking Report, “Bicycling and Walking in the U.S.,” compares bicycling and walking levels, investment in bicycling and walking, and public health.

The key findings are:
  • More people walk and bike when paths and trails are available
  • Where people bike and walk more, bicycle and pedestrian safety is greater
  • Bicycling and walking leads to better health
  • Places with well-organized advocacy groups have higher levels of biking and walking
  • Conditions for bicycling and walking need improvement
  • Better data is needed to quantify trends

The report is an important first step in consolidating the data that is available and identifying future needs. Thunderhead plans to release a new Benchmarking Report every two years.
