Who Can Give to BikesPAC
The Federal Election Commission (FEC) has strict rules on who can contribute to a political action committee.
Employees of Bikes Belong member companies
Contributions to BikesPAC are voluntary. BikesPAC can solicit contributions only from a “restricted class” that includes full-time, salaried employees of Bikes Belong member companies (although non-solicited donations from other individuals can be accepted). Federal law prohibits PACs from soliciting outside the restricted class. Contributions from corporations and associations cannot be accepted and will be returned.
BikesPAC can receive up to $5,000 a year from any one contributor. A husband and wife each has a separate $5,000 limit, even if only one spouse has income. A couple may make a joint contribution, part of which will be attributed to each.
Federal Election Law requires that BikesPAC use its best efforts to collect and report the name, mailing address, occupation, and name of employer of individuals whose contributions exceed $200 per year.
Contributions to BikesPAC are not tax-deductible.
Prior approval required
BikesPAC must have a member company’s written authorization (a signed or electronically completed participation form) on file before any of the company’s employees can be solicited for donations to BikesPAC. Specific solicitation language and signatures are required to assure compliance with Federal Election Law. Permission to solicit employees must be renewed each year.
A corporation may not authorize more than one trade association PAC to solicit its employees in a calendar year.
If you are an executive at a Bikes Belong member company and wish to authorize BikesPAC to solicit your employees, please complete a participation form now.
BikesPAC holds fundraising receptions at events like the National Bike Summit and Interbike. The same rules for solicitations (e.g., restricted class, only after prior approval) apply to invitations to these fundraising receptions. Contributions from non-members of Bikes Belong who attend these events cannot be kept and will be returned.
